Fractal Font - Experimental Typeface Design

Fractal Font is a type experiment that extends from my previous project Program Error

The inspiration came from the rich textures that emerged during that process—particularly the layered, glitch-like surfaces generated through code.

I extracted and refined these textures into visual modules, then pushed them further through iterative design and generative scripting in Processing. The result is a complete type system that embraces unpredictability, texture, and digital fragmentation—where each character feels more like a living, shifting form than a static letter.

This project follows a learning by doing approach, embracing all the possibilities that arise during the design process. It helped me deeply understand what learning by doing truly means and shifted the way I approach design—moving from fixed outcomes to open-ended exploration.

The final typeface was used in a silkscreen-printed poster for the USC Roski Graduate Program’s 2025 Open House.
