Steen Lab Visual Identity
Branding
Steen Lab, led by microbial ecologist Dr. Andrew Steen at the University of Tennessee, explores how heterotrophic microbes influence the carbon cycle and the transformation of organic matter in aquatic environments. Their work blends environmental science, data modeling, and a deep belief in open science.
This identity project transforms the lab’s philosophy into a visual system rooted in curiosity and evolution. The logo, inspired by molecular diagrams and ripple patterns, forms a shifting “S” — evoking connection, rationality, and openness to change. The bright orange node breaks symmetry, symbolizing the spark of discovery that drives research forward.
The brand system is modular and human-centered. From digital interface to scientific poster, it invites both experts and curious minds into the lab’s world — redefining scientific communication as transparent, inclusive, and alive.
Collaboration with Claire Dong and Cyrus Wang.
