The Period
Experimental Typeface
The Period is an experimental display typeface constructed from the unexpected pairing of human legs and sanitary pads. Developed as an extension of a previous project on menstrual pain, this work shifts from a tactile 2.5D format to a fully digital medium, continuing the exploration of menstruation as both a physical and social experience.
The typeface examines how structures—typographic or cultural—can be reimagined through the lens of bodily experience. Legs form vertical strokes, while pads become horizontal connectors. What results is a playful yet politically charged alphabet that literalizes the presence of the female body in language.
As the project unfolded as a type system, I also considered its behavior as a font family. In this version, the sanitary pads begin to “overflow” with blood—gradually increasing across characters—turning typographic variation into a visceral narrative of accumulation, saturation, and release.
